15 Tips for Effective Mobile Website Design

Mobile website design services are picking up like wild fire in the market today. The underlying concept of developing and designing mobile websites is very different from the websites that you see on laptops and desktops. A mobile website development company would need to be well versed with both the hardware and software elements of mobile websites.

You would have noticed by now that a considerable number of companies launch a variety of mobile handsets in various markets around the world. Each mobile handset has its own distinct feature, size of screen, user interface as well as screen resolution. These elements need to be kept in mind while designing a mobile website.

Here are 15 tips for a great mobile website:

  1. The mobile phones have much smaller screen space and therefore you need to cut down on the amount of information that you can include in the mobile pages.
  2. The phones work on much slower bandwidth even if they are on 3G. Your site loads much faster if you have smaller files, few and compact graphics and other elements.
  3. Since the capacity of the phones vary widely, use progressive enhancement. This way you will have your site working fine off the most limited browsers but show up really great with the more capable browsers and phones.
  4. Attention span on a mobile site is really limited. Include your most salient points - the big hitters -and do not try to tell everything and confuse the reader.
  5. You might try this format - powerful headline, a paragraph of introduction text and a few bullet points followed by a call to action.
  6. New page loads are taxing on the bandwidth, too much information on a single page is daunting. You have to strike a fine balance.
  7. Advertise on the mobile networks. The clicks are still affordable. You can also set up campaigns on AdWords (content display network) with mobiles as the selected target.
  8. Always send the clicks to a mobile version of the landing page. Don't drop the ball by sending the clicks to a desktop landing page which won't show up clearly on the small screens.
  9. Include a link to your main site so that they can see the whole story, if they are not happy with the limited information on the mobile site.
  10. Mobile commerce (pay from a mobile - PayPal and phone billing) is picking up very fast. Be ready to take advantage.
  11. Make your forms as small as possible. They can't fill up large forms with the mobile keyboard.
  12. Hot tip: Include a touch-to-call or click-to-call button. They are working off a mobile phone after all and calling someone is the most natural thing to do.
  13. Build a SMS list. SMS marketing, like email marketing, is a potential winner. However you need to use it responsibly or else, you will go down the email spammer route.
  14. You must include a mobile sitemap and submit it to the search engines. How can we forget the search engines? They can send large number of people to your sites after all.
  15. Setup auto-sensing and auto-redirection for mobile browsers on the main URL. Don't split your branding efforts by advertising 2 different URLs.

Mobile Website Design Tips

Mobile web design involves the development of Internet-connected applications for viewing on a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet PC that are connected to the Internet via a wireless network. This design today still suffers from usability and interoperability problems. Usability problems are difficult due to the small physical size of the mobile phone form factors. Interoperability issues arise from the platform fragmentation of mobile devices, mobile operating systems and mobile browsers. These are two of the toughest challenges when doing web design for the mobile web.

Mobile website design is very different to designing a desktop website. Mobile website design faces many challenges, not least the fact that there is no uniform browser for mobile devices. Mobile website design also has to take account of different screen sizes. Here are our top 10 tips for a great mobile web design.

1) Consider the mobile device - Mobile devices have limitations when compared to PC's, such as small screens and no mouse, but they also have capabilities such as phone, camera and SMS which need to be recognised when designing your mobile site.

2) Think about the mobile user - Mobile users are impatient as a breed, they browse differently to desktop users, as a general rule, mobile users want want fast access to bite size content.

3) Keeping it simple - Try and avoid large volumes of text, as a guide 75 words per page is a good maximum. Keep the navigation of your site as simple as possible, the fewer clicks it takes a user to find the information they want the better. Don't expect people to fill out time-consuming forms.

4) Speed is king - Large images, flash animation and video will slow your site down - avoid them if you can, functionality is more important than style for mobile websites.

5) Make it useful - Think about what is most important to your audience, especially what they need when they're on the move.

6) Make it compatible - Mobile devices are incredibly diverse. If your site is not coded correctly it may look good on one phone, awful on another and may not even work on another! Make sure your site works on all phones.

7) Choosing your domain name - Using a .mobi domain will improve your search engine rankings and make your site easier to find.

8) Market your site - Make sure potential customers can find your site. There's no point having a site if no-one knows it's there, invest time on SEO, paid search listings, operator portal and directory submissions.

SEO Tips For Mobile Website Designers

With smart phones and other mobile devices becoming increasingly popular, it is becoming more important to take into account mobile-specific SEO when it comes to designing websites for these devices. A lot of people wrongly assume that mobile SEO is the same as SEO used in regular computers, but this is definitely not the case.

To begin with, the content and method of presentation differ greatly between websites design for desktop computers or laptops and those designed for mobile devices. The main difference is in the screen size and pixelization, but the environments these devices are used in also differ. Mobile phone web browsing takes place in one of two environments - generally known as 'on the move' and 'on the couch'.

The search engines that have been built specifically for use on mobile devices have also been built differently to those created for use on desktop computers and laptops. The user's location, types of mobile device being used, and content format become more critical to SEO than keywords in mobile search engines.

This, however, is not to say that traditional SEO techniques should not be applied to mobile websites design. Include keywords in your title tags, headings and content, as well as using the appropriate tags. After all, mobile website SEO is still based on the SEO principles used in traditional websites.
There are some areas where mobile website SEO differs to that of the traditional websites, and those areas include:
  • the most important content needs to be placed in the top part of the web page to ensure search engine spiders, and users, can find it easily.
  • CSS must be used for the layout in mobile websites, as tables will not render well at all.
  • valid XHTML coding must be used, even though WML is the mobile-specific language; XHTML is more readable.
  • it is recommended that the maximum size of any given web page for a mobile device does not exceed 20 kilobytes
·         here are SEO tips for Website Designers
·
1. Make sure that you put your CSS and other scripts in external stylesheets and includes files in order to ensure that pages are not bloated with unnecessary code, and are quick to load. If your website is slow to load, visitors may not wait for it to load and go elsewhere.

2. Ensure that you use se Alt tags to describe all the images and pictures that you use. Mobile users, or those who use screenreaders, or people who have turned off images, will still want to know what the image is of. Also, with a bit of care and consideration, you can probably use some of your keywords when describing your images

3. Whilst on the subject of images, be sure to give images proper useful filenames that describe what the image is, or at least give people a clue what it might be of. People who use screenreaders or who have images turned off won't know what img001.jpg is.

4. Make sure that you use text and not images for words and content. Search engines can't see images as words yet, and so won't be abl to index the content if it is an image. Also, make sure that your navigation is text too. You won't want to miss out on an opportunity to have a keyword rich link.

5. Don't forget to make good use of the H1 and H2 tags to highlight the most important text on the page. Instead of saying "Welcome to our Website" or having the company name in H1, why not have a relevant keyword instead?

6. If you're a more creative or adventurous website designer, remember that Flash can't be fully indexed by the search engines. There's no point having an all singing and dancing website if nobody can find it because it doesn't appear in the search engine results pages.

7. You'll want to make sure that the sites you design are easy to navigate, so that visitors can find what they are looking for quickly and easily. If the navigation is hard to use, or the layout is inconsistent, then visitors are much less likely to spend a lot of time on the website, or buy from it.

8. As content is so important for SEO purposes, try and make sure that there is plenty of room for lots of relevant content. Some products may be better illustrated with images, but see if you can sell the product with lots of emotional and keyword rich content.

9. Make sure that the content isn't below the fold. People and search engines read from the top left of the screen to the bottom right. You'll want to make sure that the most important information is read first, by both visitors and search engines.

This is the era of smartphones and tablets. Manufacturers are flooding the market with hundreds of smartphones in different price range.
